Fort Lewis College supporters in the state House flexed their political muscles Wednesday to remove a reference to the school’s Native American Tuition Waiver from the state budget. The episode served as a short replay of a January controversy, The Durango Herald reports. The state Department of Higher Education had attempted to reduce state payments to Fort Lewis over concerns that the tuition-waiver program had gotten out of control. But sponsors killed the bill that the department backed after an outcry from FLC students.
