Lawmakers Wield Budget Axe

It’s time now to name “The Biggest Loser.” State budget cuts this week could hit people on Medicaid and welfare, local governments, farmers and ranchers and anyone involved with building water projects, The Durango Herald reports. The House of Representatives will spend most of the week making the cuts, which finally should close the $2.2 billion hole in this year’s budget. But in March, the whole grim process will start over, with further cuts of more than $1 billion to next year’s budget. Colleges and K-12 schools are expected to be the biggest losers next year.
